What Reefer LTL Actually Is

Reefer LTL means shipping a small temperature-controlled load, often a few pallets, on a refrigerated trailer shared with other shippers' freight. In theory it gives you the cost advantage of LTL with the protection of a reefer. In practice, it is a much smaller and more fragmented market than standard dry LTL.

Because the freight is temperature-sensitive, the trailer has to be loaded, routed, and unloaded with care. That limits how many stops a truck can make and how many shippers can share it, which is why availability is patchy.

Why It Is Hard to Find

Refrigerated trailers cost more to run, and carriers want them well filled on lanes with steady demand. Sparse lanes, long distances, and rural destinations rarely produce enough volume to justify a shared reefer run. A shipper in a remote area asking for reefer LTL may find that no carrier runs that corridor at all.

That is why many reefer LTL requests for far-flung locations cannot be filled at a reasonable price, and why we tell you early instead of leaving a request sitting without an answer.

Where Reefer LTL Tends to Work

Reefer LTL is most realistic between major population centres and along busy freight corridors, where carriers already move steady volumes of temperature-controlled goods. Shorter distances between large markets give carriers enough stops and enough freight to fill a trailer.

Availability changes with the season and with each carrier's network, so we check current options for your specific origin, destination, and temperature requirement rather than assuming a lane is covered.

What to Do When There Is No Reefer LTL

When shared reefer capacity is not available, there are usually workable alternatives. The most common is reefer FTL, where you book a dedicated refrigerated trailer. It costs more per shipment but protects the product with fewer handling points and a faster transit.

Other options include consolidating several smaller shipments into one truckload, adjusting shipping days to build a fuller load, or using insulated packaging with a standard service for products that only need protection from temperature swings.

Reefer FTL Is Often Simpler Than It Looks

Shippers sometimes assume FTL is out of reach for small quantities. For temperature-sensitive freight it is often the safer option, because every extra handoff in an LTL network adds risk. If a pallet or two of product is worth more than the added freight cost, FTL can be the cheaper choice once spoilage is counted.

We quote reefer FTL clearly so you can compare the real cost of a dedicated trailer against the risk of a damaged load.

How to Ask for a Reefer Quote

Tell us the product, the required temperature range, the number of pallets and weight, and the pickup and delivery locations with any appointment times. With that, we can tell you honestly whether shared reefer service exists, whether FTL makes more sense, or whether the lane is one we cannot serve well.

Choosing Between Reefer FTL, Consolidation, and Insulated Packaging

Start with the value and shelf life of the product. If a spoiled shipment would cost more than the freight, a dedicated reefer is usually worth it. If you ship small quantities regularly, look at whether you can consolidate several orders into one weekly truck instead of sending partial shipments every day. That may reduce your cost per pallet while still protecting product.

For products that need protection from temperature swings but not constant refrigeration, insulated packaging and phase-change packs on standard service can sometimes work. This depends heavily on the product, the season, and the transit time, so test before committing to it.

What We Can and Cannot Help With

We focus on lanes where we can arrange reliable reefer capacity, particularly dedicated reefer FTL across Canada and into the US. We do get requests for shared reefer service to very remote locations, and when there is no realistic carrier option, we would rather say so quickly than let a request sit.

If you are not sure whether your lane works, send us the origin, destination, product, temperature range, and pallet count. We will tell you whether shared service exists, what a dedicated truck would cost, or whether another approach makes more sense.

Frequently asked questions

Is reefer LTL available everywhere in Canada?

No. It is concentrated on busy corridors between major markets. Remote or low-volume lanes often have no shared reefer service.

Why can't I find reefer LTL to a remote location?

Carriers need enough freight to fill a refrigerated trailer. Sparse lanes rarely produce that volume, so shared service is not offered.

Is reefer FTL always more expensive than reefer LTL?

Per shipment, usually yes, but it has fewer handling points and a shorter transit. For perishable freight the lower risk can outweigh the higher freight cost.

Can I ship a few pallets by reefer FTL?

Yes. A dedicated reefer can carry any quantity, though consolidating freight into a fuller trailer lowers your cost per pallet.

What information do you need to quote reefer freight?

The product, temperature range, pallet count and weight, pickup and delivery locations, and any appointment windows.
